It’s Just Me
By Sami Chohfi
From the album, It’s Just Me
From Sami Chohfi –  I was born in Sacramento, CA in 1982. I started playing music when I was 14 in 1996. I asked my mom to buy me an electric guitar after I saw the Nirvana “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video. I’ve always been inspired by music from the 90s era, since that is the music I was first exposed to as a teen. My favorite artists have always been Chris Cornell, Radiohead, Stone Temple Pilots, and The Smashing Pumpkins. I write songs in many different ways, sometimes I even dream them. Not only do i write in the singer/songwriter acoustic genre but I also have a melodic rock band named Blue Helix.

The key to any good rock song is the Guitar everybody learned that when Chuck Berry came on the scene. Most notably he was the guitarist for Tears For Fears & played the iconic guitar solo on Everybody Wants To Rule The world. He was involved on the albums ‘Songs From The Bg Chair & Sowing The Seeds Of Love. Neil has had an illustrious career and went on to work with Robbie Williams for ten years. Recording the guitars on the big hits such as the solo on Rock DJ..Love Supreme.. Feel..Come Undone. Others he has shared the stage on tour and recording studio with are Tina Turner [Steamy Windows] Morrissey [Last Of The Famous International Playboys] Natalie Imbruglia, James Morrison [Undiscovered] Peter Gabriel, Rod Stewart, Jane Wiedlin [Rush Hour] Lisa Marie Presley, Heather Nova, Naked Eyes, Climie Fisher [Love Changes Everything] Van Morrison, Paul Young [Don’t Dream It’s Over] Holly Johnson [Love Train] to name a few..Working with all these iconic artists you can only imagine Neil has some amazing stories to tell. Now on his own……

Now on his own he has been releasing some amazing anthem sounding rock n roll ballads! In his own words, Neil says. “For me it’s about good songs..Being able to them play live & tour in a professional manner”

Releasing his own solo guitarist singer/songwriter material since 2011, His latest single is slated to come out 3rd May.. UNBROKEN The vocal prowess in this canticle rock anthem reverberates impeccably alongside the Guitar performance. Neil’s inspiration behind the new single “Unbroken” is about the loss of my dad. It really has affected me and even though he passed over 16 years ago, it feels like yesterday. A very personal song though I’m sure most people can relate to it in one way or another. It has a positive message
and gives a feeling of comfort.

Come Out Of The Silence is my 5th solo album..An adult contemporary rock/pop album which is unashamedly UK sounding & perfect for the US market. Most of the songs are the last songs ever written with well known song writer Steve Torch who wrote Believe by Cher & has 3 Ivor Novello awards to his name. Steve sadly passed two years ago.Neil says..This album took a while to come out as i had to finish writing it on my own..I knew i had it in me but i was used to taking a back seat whilst Steve wrote the lyrics & a lot of the melodies. I wanted to make it a tribute to Steve.. I think he would be happy with the way it turned out.

The emphasis is always been about quality songs to me & i don’t think this album will disappoint. Listen on Spotify

REFUGE’s sound is high-energy, guitar-driven rock with strong influences from ‘70s greats such as the ‪Allman Brothers‬, ‪Black Sabbath‬, ‪Neil Young‬ and Santana. A comparable modern band would be Greta Van Fleet.

The band’s youth and diversity is unmissable – members are 12 (singer) to 15 years old and they have roots in 7 countries and 4 continents. The lead guitarist and singer are also siblings. All of the members come from parents that work in humanitarian aid and development, which is what brought them to Kenya in the first place.

After 2 years of gigging some of Nairobi’s best venues, REFUGE started making waves throughout East Africa in 2018 resulting in multiple international TV, radio and online appearances. Their first recorded song even debuted at #1 in the East African rock charts, and held that position for months. Consequently, exposure on social media has grown to over 15k followers, mostly in the US and Europe.

REFUGE is confident and ambitious, and is looking for more exposure. They are highly creative and fully independent – 100% of their music is written, composed and directed by the band itself, which recently recorded a demo of 9 original songs under the album title ‘Haven to a Heavy Soul’.

I believe REFUGE’s music would be an excellent fit with your musical direction and style, and I would be grateful if you could review their top 3 songs below:

Mountain Switchback   Listen on Spotify
It’s not easy being a working band on the road. Indeed the singer sings “it’s hard to be the perfect band.” There are many distractions, but the worse of all is when they’re playing, and a beautiful woman on the dance floor breaks into a frenetic dance.
Mountain Switchback
(Gibson/Bates/Kelley 2017)

Verse 1
Set them up,
Tear them down,
Electric blowup,
Always out of town,
Tempo speedup,
Alcohol slowdown.

Sometimes it’s a chore
To be the perfect band,
Only one thing rattles us more,
Just one thing to jolt us more . . . .

Chorus
And there she is,
More and more,
Exploding on
The dance floor,
Short, young woman
In halter top and
Tight blue jeans,
And she won’t stop,
By all means,
Tight blue jeans
Diamond in her belly,
Whiff of apple jelly,
Red tat on her
Ankle . . . .
She gives her
Leg a smack,
Lord, more curves than
A Mountain Switchback.

Back In The Hills
On ode to country living.
Back In The Hills
(Gibson/Bates/Kelley 2017)

Verse 1
Way back in the Hills
Find them sit’n around,
Doing what they know they do best,
Not too many people,
Know what they do,
That’s where they go to kick it back and rest.

Chorus
No, you don’t need to worry about a neighbor,
Don’t need to pick up a telephone,
Don’t worry about being loud,
Or fighting the big city crowd,
Way back in the hills you’re all alone.
Yeah, think what you want, I call it home.

Verse 2
Away from the smog,
Smelling cows and hogs,
To me that’s what I call fresh air,
Some go there to write,
Others to spend the night,
The closest thing to a city is a county fair.

Chorus
No, you don’t need to worry about a neighbor,
Don’t need to pick up a telephone,
Don’t worry about being loud,
Or fighting the big city crowd,
Way back in the hills you’re all alone.
Yeah, think what you want, I call it home.

Instrumental

Verse 3
Yeah, back in the Hills,
Laying in a field,
In a country sky you can see a lot more stars,
Try it in the city,
You’ll find it such a pity,
Laying on the concrete, dodging cars.

Chorus
No, you don’t need to worry about a neighbor,
Don’t need to pick up a telephone,
Don’t worry about being loud,
Or fighting the big city crowd,
Way back in the hills you’re all alone.
Yeah, think what you want, I call it home.

Perfect Living
By Bear Witness
From the album Perfect Living

A powerful modern rock song. Beginning with soft vocals over a solid groove driven verse it leads into an epic chorus wherein you are surrounded by distorted guitars and a hook-infused, belted vocal that leaves you with the desire to bounce around the room singing along.

Lyrically the song is about the loss of joy and time that comes with becoming an adult. The
monotonous march of everyday life as you wish for the weekend. The title ‘Perfect Living’ is
a sarcastic remark targeted at adult life. Everyone’s struggling, however, no one will let it
show; putting up a colour corrected, highlight reel of their life to all who ask. Adult life is the
farthest thing from Perfect Living, which is what made the lyric so satisfying to write.

We storyboarded, filmed and edited the visuals of the music video ourselves, it tells the first part of a story following a gifted human under government surveillance. Having evolved to teleport and manipulate reality, we follow his journey of escape from the futuristic government army DAWN. The video story will be continued throughout Bear Witness’ next two releases from their ‘DAWN’ EP over the coming year.
