REFUGE’s sound is high-energy, guitar-driven rock with strong influences from ‘70s greats such as the ‪Allman Brothers‬, ‪Black Sabbath‬, ‪Neil Young‬ and Santana. A comparable modern band would be Greta Van Fleet.

The band’s youth and diversity is unmissable – members are 12 (singer) to 15 years old and they have roots in 7 countries and 4 continents. The lead guitarist and singer are also siblings. All of the members come from parents that work in humanitarian aid and development, which is what brought them to Kenya in the first place.

After 2 years of gigging some of Nairobi’s best venues, REFUGE started making waves throughout East Africa in 2018 resulting in multiple international TV, radio and online appearances. Their first recorded song even debuted at #1 in the East African rock charts, and held that position for months. Consequently, exposure on social media has grown to over 15k followers, mostly in the US and Europe.

REFUGE is confident and ambitious, and is looking for more exposure. They are highly creative and fully independent – 100% of their music is written, composed and directed by the band itself, which recently recorded a demo of 9 original songs under the album title ‘Haven to a Heavy Soul’.

I believe REFUGE’s music would be an excellent fit with your musical direction and style, and I would be grateful if you could review their top 3 songs below:

Mountain Switchback Lyrics by Lonesone Train

Mountain Switchback Lyrics by Lonesone Train

Alternative Country

Mountain Switchback   Listen on Spotify
It’s not easy being a working band on the road. Indeed the singer sings “it’s hard to be the perfect band.” There are many distractions, but the worse of all is when they’re playing, and a beautiful woman on the dance floor breaks into a frenetic dance.
Mountain Switchback
(Gibson/Bates/Kelley 2017)

Verse 1
Set them up,
Tear them down,
Electric blowup,
Always out of town,
Tempo speedup,
Alcohol slowdown.

Sometimes it’s a chore
To be the perfect band,
Only one thing rattles us more,
Just one thing to jolt us more . . . .

Chorus
And there she is,
More and more,
Exploding on
The dance floor,
Short, young woman
In halter top and
Tight blue jeans,
And she won’t stop,
By all means,
Tight blue jeans
Diamond in her belly,
Whiff of apple jelly,
Red tat on her
Ankle . . . .
She gives her
Leg a smack,
Lord, more curves than
A Mountain Switchback.

Back In The Hills
On ode to country living.
Back In The Hills
(Gibson/Bates/Kelley 2017)

Verse 1
Way back in the Hills
Find them sit’n around,
Doing what they know they do best,
Not too many people,
Know what they do,
That’s where they go to kick it back and rest.

Chorus
No, you don’t need to worry about a neighbor,
Don’t need to pick up a telephone,
Don’t worry about being loud,
Or fighting the big city crowd,
Way back in the hills you’re all alone.
Yeah, think what you want, I call it home.

Verse 2
Away from the smog,
Smelling cows and hogs,
To me that’s what I call fresh air,
Some go there to write,
Others to spend the night,
The closest thing to a city is a county fair.

Chorus
No, you don’t need to worry about a neighbor,
Don’t need to pick up a telephone,
Don’t worry about being loud,
Or fighting the big city crowd,
Way back in the hills you’re all alone.
Yeah, think what you want, I call it home.

Instrumental

Verse 3
Yeah, back in the Hills,
Laying in a field,
In a country sky you can see a lot more stars,
Try it in the city,
You’ll find it such a pity,
Laying on the concrete, dodging cars.

Chorus
No, you don’t need to worry about a neighbor,
Don’t need to pick up a telephone,
Don’t worry about being loud,
Or fighting the big city crowd,
Way back in the hills you’re all alone.
Yeah, think what you want, I call it home.

Don’t need to pick up a telephone,

Yeah, think what you want, I call it home.

Nine out of Ten
By Niko
From the album Nine out of Ten

The boys from Niko are on the rise with their raw, indie-rock imbued catchy songs. After a wide variety of club shows and festivals, they recorded a new record that will be released in August this year (2019). Working together with producer Tom Meijer, the band will carve deeper into that raw, catchy sound. The song and associated video clips will be promoted via multiple Dutch music platforms such as The Daily Indie.
