Creating Chant #68

Creating Chant #68

Creating Chant #68
Jeremy showed up at the studio one day, saying he thought of a great melody on the way here. We recorded just him and his guitar. I said it sounded like a chant. Within a half hour I came up with the lyrics, and in a three-hour session we had the whole song mapped out. Tommy Kelly is the singer, Jeremy Bates playing guitars, Tommy Whiteman on drums, and Matt Blocher playing keyboards Chant #68 came into being.

Chant #68 Lyrics

Hey, hey, hey
We’re in the world
Hey, hey, hey
of many dances.

Hey, hey, hey
Living the life
Hey, hey, hey
of many trances.
Here we go . . .

Hey, hey, hey
Climbing a tree
Hey, hey, hey
Of many branches.

Hey, hey, hey
It’s all about
Hey, hey, hey
Our frail chances.
Here we go . . .

Hey, hey, hey
We’re in the world
Hey, hey, hey
of many dances.

Hey, hey, hey
Living the life
Hey, hey, hey
of many trances.

Hey, hey, hey
Something about the future:

Hey, hey, hey
It always reaches into the past.

Here we go:

Hey, hey, hey
Something about the future:

Hey, hey, hey
It always reaches into the past.
Here we go now:

Death Does Not Come Humble Lyrics

Verse 1

Death does not come humble, it arises,
a lion, unsettles air, a condor,
it springs from the ocean, canonizes,
like a dolphin cutting the sea’s top door.

Chorus

Mount the back of this graceful, forgiving beast,
for you are the greatest,
for you are the least,
for you are the least.

Verse 2

Don’t lay in fear, the Receptor, don’t deny
This last expression of the breathing.
Death does not come forward to humble you,
It arises, an animal, freeing.

Chorus

Mount the back of this graceful, forgiving beast,
for you are the greatest,
for you are the least,
for you are the least.

Guitar solo

Verse 3

Humble is not the stance for you to take,
in front of this animal of great hope,
only a lack of understanding makes
you hesitate, a need to interlope.

Chorus

Mount the back of this graceful, forgiving beast,
for you are the greatest,
for you are the least,
for you are the least.

for you are the greatest,
for you are the least.

Physics, Not Metaphysics Lyrics

Verse 1

Gods, gods, and more gods,

Plentiful as a field of clods,

Neanderthals had thunder gods,

Egyptians liked two thousand gods,

Faith is the only thing,

I said, faith is the only thing,

To narrow down the odds.

I said, to narrow down the odds.

Chorus

Knowing the Afterlife has always been the goal;

We simply don’t have microscopes,

And we don’t have telescopes,

To truly detect the human soul.

May take centuries

to get the specifics,

‘Cause I’m sure it’s Physics,

not Metaphysics.

Short Instrumental

Verse 2

Gods, gods, and more gods,

Are many of them only frauds?

Moses had the one true God,

Hindus still have a million gods.

Faith is the only thing,

I said, faith is the only thing,

To narrow down the odds.

I said, to narrow down the odds.

Instrumental — guitar

Chorus

Knowing the Afterlife has always been the goal;

We simply don’t have microscopes,

And we don’t have telescopes,

To truly detect the human soul.

May take centuries

to get the specifics,

‘Cause I’m sure it’s Physics,

not Metaphysics.

Instrumental — guitar

Bridge

Oh, oh, what you going to do?

Oh, oh, what you going to do?

Gods, gods, all over the place,

None of them much fun.

Gods, gods, all over the place,

Every generation

Figures out

How to shock

The prior one.

Oh, oh, what you going to do?

Oh, oh, what you going to do?

Gods, gods, all over the place,

None of them much fun.

Gods, gods, all over the place,

Every generation

Figures out

How to shock

The prior one.

Oh, oh, what you going to do?

Oh, oh, what you going to do?

Oh, oh, what you going to do?

Oh, oh, what you going to do?

Oh, oh, what you going to do?

Oh, oh, what you going to do?

Animal Eyes Lyrics

Verse 1
When I met you, I felt awed,
I couldn’t move in your vast beauty,
When we talked, I felt like a fraud,
But hung in there, kind of a duty.

Chorus
Your raw beauty has no equal,
But your eyes are Animal Eyes.
Each chapter of Love has a sequel,
Your stalking eyes are hinged with lies.
Your love scares me,
Oh, Animal Eyes.

Short Instrumental

Verse 2
I’m a man devoted to good looks,
Even though I know it’s a snare,
One beast stalks another with hooks,
Devours souls without a care.

Chorus
Your raw beauty has no equal,
But your eyes are Animal Eyes.
Each chapter of Love has a sequel,
Your stalking eyes are hinged with lies.
Your love scares me,
Oh, Animal Eyes.

Instrumental

Bridge
Animal Eyes,
My eyes, your eyes,
Both Animal Eyes,
Something in us cries,
Watch out . . . Watch out . . . Watch out!
Watch out . . . Watch out . . . Watch out!
For our Animal Eyes.

Chorus
Your raw beauty has no equal,
But your eyes are Animal Eyes.
Each chapter of Love has a sequel,
Your stalking eyes are hinged with lies.
Our love scares me,
Oh, Animal Eyes.
Animal Eyes,
Animal Eyes
